Taza Chocolate

Somerville, Massachusetts

Taza Chocolate makes artisan, stone ground chocolate in small batches that is fair to farmers and seriously delicious. Taza sources its cacao directly from small cooperatives, and they always pay a premium above Fair Trade Organic prices for cacao beans. Taza chocolate is minimally processed, using authentic Oaxacan stone mills instead of steel refiners to grind the cacao. This allows unrefined cacao particles and sugar granules to remain in the finished chocolate. These pop with explosive flavor on the palette, lending Taza's chocolate bars and discs their distinctive granular texture.

Taza is proud to make chocolate that is "good, clean, and fair": good to eat, clean for the planet, and fair to farmers.

Our Story

When I first decided I wanted to start a chocolate company, I was in Oaxaca City in Mexico and ended up studying under a local Molinero de Chocolate. He taught me how to maintain the molinos (mills) and how to dress the mill stones for grinding chocolate. I have been passionate about Mexican style chocolate ever since.

-Alex Whitmore, Co-founder Taza Chocolate

At Taza Chocolate, we make small batch, bean-to-bar chocolate that is good for farmers and seriously delicious. Located in Somerville, MA, we are the only producer in the US of 100% stone ground, organic chocolate. We use exclusively organic and sustainable ingredients to craft our chocolate, and this attention to quality is evident in all of our products.

Taza utilizes a Direct Trade sourcing model, where direct relationships with our growers bring us the highest quality ingredients while ensuring fair wages and work practices on the farm. Taza sources its cacao directly from small cooperatives, and we always pay a premium above Fair Trade Organic prices for our beans.
